Can I change from a gas to an electric built in oven?
The thermostat has gone on my gas oven and after lots of searching, all built in ovens within my price range are electric. My current single oven has a grill element at the top that I presume is electric and a socket in the cupboard next to it. Does this mean that I can have an electric oven installed without too much aggravation? Also, how much should I expect installation to cost in th Uk? Any advice would be really appreciated, thank you in advance.
Sorry but you dont need the gas board to disconnect your cooker. Unless the oven is hard piped ie is actually attached with a solid pipe, then a flex pipe can be disconnected by yourself from the self sealing bayonet connector. I am not sure if by built in you mean in a housing at high level or under a counter top usually below the hob. If it is the latter it will most certainly be on a hose as the hob is fitted first and secured under the worktop then the oven is plugged in and fitted to the cavity. A high level cooker could be connected by either method but if its hard plumbed then you will need a Gas Safe registered engineer to disconnect and make safe. The actual cost for that would vary from gas fitter to gas fitter but probably around the £50 mark. As far as installing an electric oven in its place to the existing socket it would not have to exceed 3kW as a maximum or you would need a proper cooker cicuit installed by a part P registered electrical contractor. Why cant the oven stat be replaced,is it an old cooker?
