Installing Indoor Fountains
There are two major types of indoor water fountains: floor fountains and wall fountains. There are also desktop fountains and fountains that take up an entire corner of a room, but these either require no installation or require specific installation procedures. For most fountain owners, installing a fountain indoors is very easy. Modern fountain designs are largely self-contained and very reliable. The heart of any fountain is an electric pump that circulates the water. As long as there's a supply of electricity nearby, a fountain can be installed most anywhere.
One of the major installation concerns with indoor fountains is light. There are two basic options for addressing this. If the fountain is primarily going to be seen only during the day—such as in an office—installing it near a window or another source of light makes sense. Lighting for afterhours really isn't necessary if your office closes at the end of the day and there will be no one around to see it, anyway. An indoor water feature in an office can also be installed centrally or off to the side, depending upon the design of the room and the fountain itself.
Indoor water fountains that are going to be showpieces day and night should be enhanced with lighting. Wall fountains can be lit in the same fashion that paintings are lit. This is particularly smart because some of the most attractive features of a fountain—such as the shine of the metal or the detail of the slate—are really only visible when they're clearly lit. If you need to make sure that everyone can see your fountain in all its majesty, consider small floodlights or other creative ways of lighting it up. The water makes spectacular effects with lighting, enhancing the beauty of the water feature.
Indoor fountains that are floor mounted need to be placed somewhere that they'll be noticed but where they won't be in the way. For very large rooms, indoor water features are sometimes installed in the center of the room and become a major element of the décor. In smaller rooms, they may be off to the side. There are designs that accommodate both uses. In a home, it's generally a more flexible environment than an office where designs are concerned as giving a businesslike impression to clients isn't a consideration. This means you can be as creative as you want with designs and lighting.
