Tips for Windshield Washer Repairs

The other day at Kelowna Paragon Motors, another windshield washer bit the dust.  Literally.  It would not even pump air.  The customer complaint was that when he put fluid in the bucket, and then pressed the handle on the steering column, nothing happened at the wiper blades and windshield.

Here is the process that Paragon Motors used to find the problem:

1. Put one pint of fluid in empty washer reservoir.
2. Turn ignition to accessory.
3. Activate windshield washer on steering column.
4. Note fluid running on ground.
5. Open hood of car if not already open.
6. Have helper operate windshield washer.
7. Observe location of leak.
8. If no fluid output, does w/w motor run.?
9. If no motor operation, check fuses or use a test light at motor.
10. Repair.
11. Test.
12. Fill with good quality fluid that includes non-freeze and glass cleaner additives.
13. Examine Wiper Blades and replace if necessary.

Windshield Washer Repairs

Of interest to the reader is the fact that the cause of this problem was hard water.

The owner of the car had been adding water instead of windshield washer antifreeze. The result was during the winter the reservoir, lines and washer Pump Froze.  The cost of repair was severe as the washer pump itself installed  cost a lot of money.

Also of note, rather than purchasing the original hard plastic hose, we replace it with rubber hose.

So often, no matter who we are or how educated we may be, a poor decision will cause cataclysmic problems for ourselves, others and even our vehicle. In this case, adding water to the windshield washer reservoir is not a good decision. First off it does not clean the windshield efficiently. Secondly, it freezes if you are in a cold weather climate.

To see just how filthy the environment is that these wiper blades experience, take a clean cloth, some dish washing soap and clean the wiper blades. Black mark on your cloth?

Do yourself a favor and clean the blades every time you fill your gas tank. Of course, the windshield needs the cleaning also.                               Windshield Washer Repairs

What would cause a drinking glass to explode with juice in it?

I received a phone call a little while ago from my aunt who said that her drinking glass with a small amount of Pina Colada V8 Smoothie had exploded suddenly. She told me that after retrieving the glass from the cupboard and pouring the juice, she set it down next to her laptop to play games. A few moments later is when the glass had exploded.

The only thing that would cause it to explode would be an extreme change in temperatures

She didn't say how long it had been in the cupboard. Maybe she had just cleaned it and it was still hot ... unless her kitchen is very warm and the room with her laptop is much colder ... she would have to fill the very warm glass with a very cold smoothie. That could be the only explanation

I had a large heavy glass vase that I washed in hot soapy water and dried. I then moved it to the pantry which was quite cold (one of the walls is an outside wall with a very old drafty window). It wasn't long before I heard what sounded like a small bomb. When I went to the kitchen and opened the pantry door I saw it: the vase in 3 pieces on the floor.
