how long would i have to stay with the military if i become a food service specialist?
i plan on becoming a food service specialist in one the many branches of the military that offer this career.
i basically just want to get some experience and training before i go to culinary school.
The Army and the Navy are the only services which have active duty enlistment options of less than four years. The Army offers enlistment contracts of two years, three years, four years, five years, and six years. Only a few Army jobs are available for two and three year enlistees (mainly those jobs that don't require much training time, and that the Army is having a hard time getting enough recruits). Most Army jobs require a minimum enlistment period of four years, and some Army jobs require a minimum enlistment period of five years. Additionally, under the Army's 2-year enlistment option, the two years of required active duty don't start until after basic training and job-school, so it's actually longer than two years (About.com).
I would advise you to call your local recruiter and find out if the MOS you want offers a two-year enlistment contract. Also ask if with a shorter enlistment you would incur any Active or Inactive Guard/Reserve service commitment after leaving active duty.
