Orange peel skin and cottage cheese thighs
Orange peel skin, cottage cheese thighs, lumpy, bumpy, ripply legs and bum. Cellulite. It is a frustration experienced by up to 98 percent of post pubescent females. It just may be our biggest concern when we go bathing suit shopping, and the main reason we avoid an accidental peek at our bare backsides in the mirror.
The term cellulite was graciously brought to us by the cosmetics industry during the 1970s in order to sell billions of dollars of useless expensive creams, gels, lotions, and potions. In the last few decades, countless ‘cellulite cures’ have been introduced with empty promises and outrageous price tags. Everything from loofah sponges, special washcloths, vitamins, minerals, body wraps, spa treatments, rubberized pants, massagers, exfoliants and now lasers and liposuction have been successfully marketed yet unsuccessful in their intended purpose.
Cellulite is a very normal and very common accumulation of fat. Contrary to what the saleswoman at the cosmetics counter may tell you, it poses no health risk, it is not toxic to your system, nor is it unnatural.
It is caused by fat deposits that push and distort the connective tissues beneath the skin, leading to the lumpy appearance of skin most commonly seen on the hips, buttocks and thighs. Science has shown that people with cellulite (basically every female on earth) have different patterns of connective tissue than those that don’t. Cellulite really has nothing to do with excess weight at all. Women of all ages, all shapes and sizes, ethnic backgrounds and celebrity status are affected.
A number of factors contribute to the severity of cellulite. Genetics, skin thickness, gender, age, hormones and the amount and distribution of body fat all influence the appearance of cellulite.
As stated earlier, up to 98 percent of women experience some degree of cellulite, while it occurs very rarely in men. This is thought to be because of the composition and behavior of womens' fat cells and the connective tissue that holds those fat cells in place. Women have thinner and less flexible connective tissue which can cause expanding fat cells to bulge upwards close to the surface of the skin, causing the orange peel look.
A number of hormones are believed to play a role in cellulite formation. Estrogen is apparently most responsible with insulin, adrenaline, prolactin and thyroid hormones thought to play a supporting role.
Genetic factors also determine cellulite development. Just as you may have your Mothers eye, you will also most likely have her thighs.
Poor lifestyle choices such as smoking, excessive drinking, lack of exercise, unhealthy eating habits and stress are detrimental not only to our quality of life and general health, they also have all been correlated with increased cellulite formation.
So what’s the best way to get rid of cellulite? Unfortunately there really are no answers yet. What is known for sure is that creams, gels, massage, loofahs, special pills, lipo, injectable ‘fat melters’, caffeine, body wraps, special diets, toxin removers and rubber pants are all ineffective, expensive and in some cases, very dangerous. These treatments have been proven ineffective no matter how expensive, exotic or so called ‘scientifically proven’ they claim to be.
The FDA has approved combined laser/massage therapies, but they are very expensive, time consuming and temporary solutions. On going treatments are required and although slight improvement in skin smoothness may be seen in some cases, these improvements are short lived and temporary.
In summary, a clean healthy diet along with regular workout routines and healthy lifestyle choices are once again the best way to achieve the beautiful, healthy body you so desire. While diet and exercise won’t change genetics or your age, or gender, making healthy choices will improve your quality of life, your appearance and your state of mind. The best part is that eating nutritious wholesome food and exercising regularly is inexpensive, requires no drugs, no needles, no Doctors, no lasers and no knives!
